Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future The 15th anniversary of the Otranto Tragedy was commemorated today in
Vlore, where relatives held a ceremony in honor of the people who lost
their lives while attempting to abandon the hell that had swept Albania
in the spring of 1997.
The “Kateri i Rades” ship parts arrived during the day, which will be used as monument to this tragedy.
The ship equipments that came for Brindisi were brought by the Albanian artists, Arta Nguci and Arben Beqiraj, who will keep working for this monument.
The relatives threw flowers in the water, in honor of the victims. The Kateri i Rades ship sailed from this pier 15 years ago, with 118 people in it, among them many women and children.
At 18:50, the Itlian Marine vessel named “Sibila” hit the body of the small 23 meters long vessel, causing the death of 84 people, with only 34 survivors. 24 of the bodies have never been found.
After the ceremony, the ship parts were placed at the Skele Square, where the monument will be built.
