OSCE: “Democracy needs dialogue.”

The OSCE ambassador in Tirana, Eugen Wollfarth, reinforces the message given by the US Ambassador a few days ago, for the government to start a dialogue.

Through a press release, Wollfarth declared that the situation should not be aggravated further with harsh public declarations.

“Democracy needs dialogue. Making harsher public political declarations you only aggravate an already tense situation. I encourage all parties, including the civil society, to engage in a sincere discussion in order to find a constructive to progress”, the ambassador writes.

As for the hunger strike and the protest held in front of the Parliament, Wollfarth declared that the issue of the former political prisoners is essential.

“The right to hold peaceful protests is essential in a democratic government. I congratulate everyone that was involved in today’s demonstration, the protesters and the police employees, for securing a constructive atmosphere. The matters mentioned in today’s protest and the hunger strike that some political prisoners are holding are essential for Albania”, the Ambassador writes.

The declaration of the OSCE presence in Albania refers to a protest held in front of the Parliament by the political prisoners, who demanded dialogue with the Prime Minister, who they accused of concentrating all powers in one hand and creating a terror climate for the strikers, after the arrest of one of them during the night. They considered the arrest as a political move and declared that the messages of the international community should be heard. They demand a dialogue with the government; otherwise they ask them to resign.

An interesting fact was the great number of police forces, despite the low number of protesters. The police officers had surrounded the entire perimeter of the Parliament building.
