A Tirana Prosecution task force started to investigate the way
the businessman Hajri Elezaj earned his house arrest on bad health condition
pretenses.
The first steps of the investigation include a verification of the diagnosis.
On the same day when the court sentenced Elezaj to prison, he asked medical help from the University Hospital Center “Mother Theresa”. This diagnosis will be verified through the one released by forensic experts, who concluded that his health was endangered by prison conditions.
The Prosecution raised its suspicions about the procedure, but this is the first step of the investigation, and only after its conclusion they might be able to open a possible criminal case. The Prosecution suspected on the health conditions pretenses since the beginning, and for this reason they addressed to the forensic medical conclusions first.
Parallel to this investigation, the Prosecution will continue its attempts for finding the location of Hajri Elezaj, against whom they added the charge of violating the house arrest court order. Elezaj disobeyed to this order, although it was a low-level security measure.
The Prosecution does not say if they will investigate other people who might have helped Elezaj to escape, except for the doctors. But the Prosecution states that after concluding the preliminary verification with the hospital, they will be able to assess the circumstances that caused his custody measures to be changed.
Other people involved in the investigation are police agents whose duty was to supervise his house arrest.
11 persons were arrested for the Virgine Oil scandal, many of them businessmen who left prison one by one. The scandal was denounced by MP Dritan Prifti.
