A team from ODIHR arrived in Tirana to assess what will be needed for the elections of June 23rd.

The team started its tour with the Foreign Minister, Edmond Panariti, who guaranteed the ODIHR representatives “that the Albanian government is committed to hold fair elections and that this mission will contribute in creating the necessary institutional climate for normal elections”.

The ODIHR vice Director for elections, Nicola Schmidt, explained that the goal of the visit is to collect facts regarding the elections and decide if ODIHR will send an observing mission to Albania or not.

“We are here in response to the invitation made by the Albanian government, to realize our mission for assessing what is needed before the elections. We have just arrived and it is still early for us to give a conclusion. The goal of this visit is to study the situation and decide if ODIHR should send or not an observatory mission for the next elections. As result of these meetings, we will plan a report that will be published on ODIHR’s website. The report will have our conclusions and if it will be necessary to send an observatory mission in Albania”, Schmidt declared.
