Observing mission in Albania

16/04/2011 19:40

More than one month has passed and the European Parliament has not assigned the observing team that will monitor Albanian local elections.

Eduard Kukan, Chairman of the EP Delegation for Balkan:
“There will be an ad-hoc delegation by the European Parliament. This decision was taken in the Conference of Chairmen. We will send seven members for the EU ad-hoc delegation. This means that it is not an official delegation, but an ad-hoc one, since EU and EP do not usually send observing missions on local elections. Because of the significance that these elections have for Albania, and based on the current inner political situation and for the future of this country, we judged that our presence should be represented by a special mission only for this occasion, by the European Parliament”.

TCH:
Have you already chosen the members?

Kukan:
No. The political groups should inform the secretariat for this. I don’t know what the deadline is. We are waiting the answers for the nominations by the political groups.

TCH:
Do you plan being present there?

Kukan:
I don’t know this yet.

Victor Bostinaru, S&D, Vice Chair of EP Delegation for Balkan:
It is very possible that I will be present as part of the EP delegation.

Doris Pack, MEP:
Until now, no one from our political group has applied for this mission, even after the request made by Mr. Kukan. I don’t know, maybe someone will come from our political group, but not me. I don’t want to become ridiculous. Everyone knows that I have observed elections there, and to what did it serve?

Initially, the observing delegation was thought to be formed of four MEPs, but currently has been agreed that this EU presence should be extended to seven members, who will proportionally represent the right centered majority and the left centered minority of the European Parliament.
