Obesity threatens children

18/11/2011 00:00

Obesity and bad nutrition is turning into a concerning problem for
Albania, where more than 35% of the population is overweight, and 20% of
the children are obese.

The lack of public spaces and physical activities are increasing the number of obese children and young people. The Rector of Sports University, Vesel Rizvanolli, asked the government for more investments in sportive spaces, arguing that any investment in sports could decrease health care investments up to four times.

The World Health Organization recommends 60 minutes of daily sportive activities for children and 30 for adults. Experts ask for more investments in sportive areas and schools, where young people can play after school.

A big problem remains the lack of public spaces in big cities, and the low investments for special sports, where cannot participate a big percentage of the citizens.
