Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future The Durres Supreme Court ended the trial against the 81-year-old Shaban
Norja, who was found guilty of killing and beheading the 18-year-old
pregnant girl, Ajshe Vata.
The Prosecution demanded life to prison for the murderer. The defendant showed full remorse, saying that only he and God knew how much he regretted his act.
The defence admitted that their client was guilty, but demanded the court to give a softer sentence, based on his deep remorse and old age. The prosecution had asked life to prison, but without objecting the defence’s request for accelerated trial.
The judge gave 25 years to prison for the 81 year old murderer.
Norja’s case had one of the shortest trials. The 18-year-old Ajshe Vata was found beheaded in Xhafzotaj, Durres, 500 meters from her house.
Shaban Norja declared that he had been having intimate relations with the victim, and that he committed the murder to comply with her wishes, since Ajshe was pregnant with him and he had asked her to abort the child. Being religious, Ajshe told him that she would rather die than abort her baby. She allegedly asked him to kill her and cut the head from her body, so that no one could know that it was her.
The crime that shocked the Albanian public opinion has ended with a 25-year-sentence.
