No consensus for AMA members

The majority and opposition failed to reach consensus for the formula
that elects the seventh member of the Audio-Visual Media Authority and
the Council of Albanian Radio Television has not been reached.

Mark Marku from the majority asked to find a solution through simple majority, but the opposition wants qualified majority.

Mark Marku: We have proposed no other variant besides the one that all EU member countries have. A variant in which in most of the cases, the regulatory authorities are chosen through the chambers, the Senate or the Parliamentary MPs. Sometimes they are elected by the governments too. We have the most guaranteeing variant possible.

Valentina Leskaj: The reason why we proposed a variant that enables consensus is related with the fact that one law which guarantees consensus gives more guarantee for an independent institution, because the proposition that we brought is not related with the opposition or the majority”, Leskaj declared.

Mark Marku: The regulating body cannot have a qualified majority in a time whent he Albanian President, the Prosecutor and Constitutional Members are not elected through qualified majority, and we are not talking about an institution that is higher than these.

Valentina Leskaj: Simple majority will not make it more autonomous than a qualified majority.

Alfred Dalipi from the opposition declared that they are looking for the intervention of the international partners who have assisted with the draft-law for the audio-visual media. The opposition supports the variant planned by them, in which if the seventh member is not elected through consensus, they will cast lots. The Chairwoman of the Media and Education Commission, Valentina Leskaj, declared that they will ask for the Culture Minister’s presence for all damages and theft done during this period to the culture monuments.
