Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future The British General Prosecutor, Keir Starmer, expressed his concern
regarding the personal and public attacks toward the independent
institutions in Albania.
The head of the British Prosecution declared that these attacks damage the democratic elements of the system. Starmer expressed his concern for the increasingly perception for the impunity of corruption in Albania.
“I have heard concerns for a growing perception of the impunity towards corruption in Albania, concerns about the immunity and the need to improve the Code of Penal Procedures. I have also heard about the need that the politicians have to support credible and non-militant trials, in order to strengthen the independence and the capacity of the democratic institutions. As director of an independent institution, I am concerned for the personal and public attacks against the integrity of the independent institutions and the individuals that direct them. These attacks damage not only the targeted individuals, but also the democratic elements of the system. If there are real concerns or evidence for the violations, these pretenses should be followed through the appropriate channels, rather then using just words for pressuring the individuals”, Stramer declard.
The British prosecutor refused to comment the investigations and the January 21st events, but he declared that in Great Britain, when he took decisions that were disliked by the government and politicians, he met their opposition too.
By advising the highest leaders of justice in the country, the Supreme Court members, the General Prosecutor, the Ombudsman and the media, Starmer declared that when he had been in a similar situation, he was only concerned about the continuity of the process. According to the British Prosecutor, Albania has the capacity for making a reform in justice, the members of which should not be partial militants.
