No ambulance in Memaliaj

02/11/2011 00:00

The Memaliaj Health Center has been functioning without an ambulance.
The staff says that the vehicle had been stolen and was never replaced.

The patients have to rush to the ER with the personal vehicles of the staff or by taxi. The situation is very concerning, especially for the cases that need emergent interventions or for a more specialized treatment in the Tepelena or Gjirokaster hospitals.

In such cases, they wait for the arrival of an ambulance from the neighboring hospitals or the transportation is made with private vehicles.

This health center, according to Dr. Maltona Berxhi, makes 30-40 visits each day, and most of the patients have chronicle illnesses. In emergent cases that require quick transportation, the situation becomes critical.

Dr. Berxhi says that although there is no ER doctor for this unit, there are seven family doctors who can give the first help for the cases when there are no medicaments. But in most cases, the patients must address to the pharmacies.

There are currently 28 employees in this health center, 7 of whom are doctors and the rest are nurses, who serve to a community of 10.000 residents.
