Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future The committee for the 100th anniversary of independence chose trough
dilemmas the monument that will commemorate the creation of the Albanian
state.
Although it is the creation of a foreign author, this monument has received more points from the jury and the public.
The dilemma stays on the fact that the monument is modern, for the traditional squares that Tirana offers, but the Minister of Culture, Aldo Bumci, gave convincing arguments that resolved the dilemma.
“For the contemporary monuments we need contemporary esthetics. It is not the monument of independence, but the monument of the 100th year of independence. The monument of independence is still in Vlore, with all its values, but this is the 100th anniversary. I think that the element of human interaction with the citizens that will walk through this monument, with the declaration of independence, will create a conenction. The declaration is necessary and will be there for the citizens to see”, Bumci declared.
The square for the monument of the 100th anniversary of independence has not been found yet, but the government is waiting the Tirana Municipality to cooperate with it very soon. The committee also approved the three official posters that were elected by the jury that will follow every activity for the 100th year of independence.
Prime Minister Berisha asked the committee to accelerate the procedures for returning to Albania the remains of the former king, Ahmet Zogu. He also declared that the project for rebuilding the tomb of the Queen Mother is still going on, which was blown up by the communist regime. The Prime Minister also demanded the construction of a royal cemetery, where the remains of King Ahmet Zog will be placed.
“The Parliament has a law for the status of the royal family. The law is consensual and all political parties have voted it. We will discuss with the Prince, and the King will be placed at the Royal Cemetery. There is no reason for us to open any unnecessary debate”, Berisha declared.
