Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future The World Bank raises the concern that the world is facing a new food
crisis. The bank reported that the food prices have increased with 8%
only in the last four months, in a global scale, and now are 6% lower
than the historical record of 2011.
The data indicate that the prices have increased for all basic foods, besides rice. The bank says that there are a series of causes that are rapidly increasing the food price, but the two most important ones are the oil price increase and the weather destabilization in several regions.
The oil price in global markets has increased with 13%, compared to last December, by increasing the costs of farmers who have reflected it in their food prices. Besides the oil price increase, the extreme weather conditions, such as the cold in Northern Eruope and Russia have directly increased the price of crops.
The World Bank warns that if the global food production will be lower than the current food price predictions, they could reach other record levels. The food prices have been very unstable recently. Since 2008, the world has experienced two food crisis, and now concerns are raising for a third one, since the food prices are reaching what the World Bank experts have considered the official crisis limit.
