Netherlands is looking for other European Union countries as allies in
the decision to reject Albania’s candidate status, so that they will not
be alone. This is the conclusion of a news report written by
“Netherlands Times”.
The article says that “Minister Frans Timmermans (Foreign Affairs) does not want to do the ‘dirty work’ for other European countries by prematurely opposing Albania’s membership. He will look for allies within Europe to support his position.”
Explaining the circumstances that produced this “no”, the Dutch newspaper underlines that the government thinks that Albania is not ready yet for the status, since the political standards that have been reached have not been implemented yet.
This position is attributed to the former declarations of the Dutch Foreign Minister, Timmermans, who said: “If this Balkan country is ready by mid 2014, then they should receive the candidate status”.
“Netherlands Times” writes that most of the Parliamentary parties are against the proposition of the European Commission. However, Netherlands might be alone in this decision.
In this situation, Timmermans says that other countries who share the same opinion will leave this dirty job to Netherlands.
If this happens, Netherlands will be facing critics even from other skeptic countries, which might not be open with the arguments,
“Other countries who share the opinion that Albania is not ready, will leave the “dirty work” up to the Dutch. The Netherlands will have to deal with all the criticism, and other countries will stay “below the wind.” Timmermans does not feel like playing that game”, according to Netherlands Times.
The Dutch Parliament has eventually agreed with the proposition of the Minister to give him until next week to find allies in other European countries.
