Gjergj Ndreca, the former political prisoner who set himself on fire
yesterday is stable. According to the doctors, 35% of Ndreca’s body is
burned and the patient reacts.

The Health Minister, Vangjel Tavo, who has visited Ndreca in hospital, declared that he will still be cured at the Tirana Hospital.

“The situation is under control and he is receiving the necessary treatment. His conditions are improving and we have the necessary medicaments and a professional staff”, Tavo declared.

The EU Ambassador also visited Ndreca today, and asked for dialogue between the parties.

“We are in front of a situation which shows that there is a problem. I trust that this problem can be treated through dialogue and contacts, and also by implementing the respective legislation. I have no doubts that everyone will play a positive role”, Sequi declared.

Strikers, eight-point declaration

The former political prisoners released a public declaration on Top Channel’s “Shqip”, by Rudina Xhunga.

Their declaration had eight points, the first of which is that the strike is only economically motivated.

Secondly, the strikers say that any effort from parties or other associations to give a political orientation to the strike is unaccepted.

Thirdly, the political prisoners declared that the Prime Minister’s declaration, saying that the strike is encouraged by the Socialist Party, is considered an effort to avoid their requests.

The fourth point is that the political prisoners consider the silence of the Albanian President unacceptable.

In the fifth point the strikers ask the international organizations in Tirana, especially the EU ambassador, Ettore Sequi, the US Ambassador, Alexander Arvizu, to intervene so that their request can take an answer from the Albanian institutions.

The sixth point states that the political prisoners value the reflection of their issue by non-government media and appeal the government to not give unfair reports on the media that they control.

In the seventh point, the former political prisoners thank the Albanian citizens for their support in these difficult days.

The eighth and last point states that the political prisoners express their determination to stay firm until the end of the strike, saying that it is better to die with honour than disdained.
