NATO supports the Kosovo Security Forces under the current mandate.
The NATO Spokesperson, Oana Lungescu, declared that the future of the Kosovo Security Forces is up to the people of Kosovo. This is an internal matter of the Kosovo institution.
But if the KSF mandate will change, the NATO council will review its engagement levels as regards the process of building capacities”, Lungescu declared.
The KSF is considered a professional military armed force that protects the country’s sovereignty. To turn it into a proper army, the government of Kosovo needs votes from the Serbian Parliament Members, who have categorically refused and don’t show any intention to ever vote in favor of this transformation.
For this reason, President Hashim Thaci said that the transformation will be done in a different way, by avoiding votes of the Serbian Parliament Members. He was criticized that this move would not have international support. Thaci replied in an interview for the VOA that the international community must reflect about this fair engagement of Kosovo’s institutions.
Serbia was alarmed by this fact and their politicians issued harsh declaration, warning for an international diplomatic action to stop the transformation of Kosovo’s Security Forces into an army.
Belgrade has tried for years to stop the creation of the Kosovo Army, by not allowing Serbian MPs to vote the constitutional amends that are needed, despite the fact that the 5000-troop-army would also represent the Serbian population.
