A special and solemn ceremony was held by the Albanian President, Bamir
Topi, for awarding him posthumously with the order “Honor of the
Nation”.

The President paid homage not only to the politician, but also to his personal friend, by underlining the calm and civil nature of the politician from Shkoder. Topi added that in contrast with the conflicting models of the politicians presented in Albania, Arbnori created the model of the European politician, and will be remembered by everyone for his integrity. The President reminded that Arbnori was elected in five legislatures and had always been an activist of the human rights.

His daughter, Gjystina Arbnori, declared that this reward goes beyond her father’s figure, because it also honors his many friends and family members who have followed him in the very last moments.

Arbnori has been considered as the Albanian Mandela, for the 28 years in prison during the communist regime. He was co-founder and one of the main figures of the Democratic Party. He was the Parliament Speaker for many years, but he was also noted for his hunger strike in 1998 in support of the freedom of speech, when the Public Television had reduced maximally the time dedicated to the opposition.

For his merits, Pjeter Arbnori’s name is given to a school in Fushe Arrez and the International Cultural Centre, which the government has planned to demolish. Arbnori’s ceremony had no connection with the political actuality. In fact, it was the political actuality what delayed it. But Pjeter Arbnori doesn’t belong only to the actual majority, but the entire Albania.
