Nationalist rhetoric

The nationalist rhetoric of the recent months in Albania and Kosovo has concerned the United States of America.

The former US Ambassador to NATO, Kurt Volker, and former CIA analyst David Kanin, declared for Voice of America that this is not something new in the region, and the Albanian Prime Minister is using it as a manoeuvre before the elections of June.

Washington’s reaction according to the former Ambassador to NATO is reasonable if one sees America’s efforts for bringing stability in Balkan; for stopping the conflict in Kosovo and supporting Albania’s NATO membership.

“All of this cannot be endangered by such rhetoric”, Volker declared.

As for the comments of Prime Minister Thaci, after the visa liberalization process stalled for Kosovo, Volker declared that such problems should not be used to turn the back on the western world.

“We have many delicate states in Balkan, and the games with their borders in a time when there are no strong political institutions and neither a thorough culture of multiethnic respect are very dangerous, and things can get irritated by such rhetoric”, Volker declared.

David Kanin, a former CIA official and currently a professor at the International Study School of Jophn Hopkins University, declared that Berisha is trying to preserve his power through these declarations. He says that we are not talking about a uniform Albanian universe that can be joined automatically.

“Although the objective is short termed, the shock will be felt even after the elections. Because if PM Berisha thinks that this is the way to secure votes now, someone else will think the same later”, Kanin declared.
