Nationalism, American warning

14/02/2013 00:00

An official memo was sent to the Tirana government by Washington a few
days ago, which the Foreign Ministry refused to comment. A copy of this
document was received by Top Channel journalists and was transmitted on
Top Story, the weekly political show hosted by Sokol Balla.

The document is a clear evidence of the US concern about the nationalist rhetoric and the shifted attention from the real problems in the country.

It is not only related to these declarations, but also with the dramatic consequences that it might bring to the stability in the region.

Americans always have to deal with some part of the politicians being unhappy that they’re supporting the other side, but Albania remains deeply a pro-American country, which means that what is good for America is also good for Albania.

But what are the consequences that this memo raises as a concern, and  to whom is it addressed?

For the answers, Sokol Balla invited an excellent panel of experts, starting with the Socialist former Prime Minister, Pandeli Majko; Artan Hoxha, analyst and director of the Tirana Buisness University; Lisian Bashkurti, Foreign Secretary of the Red and Black Alliance; the New Democratic Spirit political secretary, Afrim Krasniqi and the renowned analyst Shpetim Nazarko.

“This is part of the memo:

(This is only part of the text that the US Embassy sent to the Albanian Foreign Ministry).

“We are very disappointed and concerned that the Albanian leaders are veering away from the traditionally constructive role that Albania has played in the region.

Recent public declarations made by Albania’s politicians have crossed the line from responsible political discussion to counterproductive, potentially dangerous rhetoric. They not only promote more inflammatory behaviour and distract from the region’s priorities, but potentially incite violence, erode peace and stability, and impact our relationship. Using negative ethnic messages for political ends is destabilizing and counterproductive.

Using negative ethnic messages for political ends must stop now. The upcoming parliamentary elections are no excuse for irresponsible rhetoric. We urge Albania’s politicians and political leaders to act responsibly and stay out of the affairs of Serbia. Instead focus on the priorities of the Albanian people in Albania – free and fair parliamentary elections, integration with the EU, improve economic opportunities, etc.

Albania can and should be a responsible cooperative neighbour but its politicians must first refrain from the temptation to play the nationalist card. You are not making a good impression, just as we prepare for a new State Department Leadership.

Don’t make us condemn you publicly.”
