National Guard: “We were forced to use guns on January 21st”

Despite the debates, after four people were killed during a
demonstration on January 21st, 2011, the National Guard insists that
they were forced to fire after the entrance gate was broken by
protesters.

With this argument, the National Guard requested the Court to reject the lawsuit of the relatives of the victims, Faik Myrtaj and Ziver Veizi. They remind that PM Rama ordered in July 2014 the establishing of a group that would evaluate the damage. The National Guard quotes that the attack of the protesters were harsh and the National Guard officers were justified to use guns.

The National Guard blames the State Police and mentions the protest of Genova, in 2001, when a protester was killed by the Carabinieri during a G8 meeting. “In this case, the relatives address the state for the damage, not to the Carabinieri”, they argue.

Referring to the “Gerdeci” case, the Guard notes that their institution operates with decisions from the Council of Ministers, who request help.
