The Muslim Community has opposed the proposition of the Tirana
Municipality for building a mural public cemetery for the Albanian
capital.

“Due to the pressure used upon these cemeteries, we will be obliged to recreate them in a new and serious system, by freeing more space and that will still be available for the citizens”, declared the vice Mayor, Edmond Panariti.

“A tradition of the Muslim community is to bury their loved ones into the ground. Muslims have no other alternative, and I do not believe that all Muslims will agree to make mural tombs of concrete blocks”, declared the Chairman of the Muslim Community.

During a meeting with the religious community members, the catholic and orthodox representatives declared that mural tombs are their religious traditions.

“There is a tradition in orthodox countries to exhume an decomposed body after some years, place it in a box and secure it in a building that is called ‘the place of the asleep’, the Orthodox representative declared.

“The mural tombs are a consolidated tradition in the catholic religion”, declared the representative of the catholic community.

Tirana needs 1.5 ha of land each year to bury 3000 people that die annually. In this situation, the Tirana Municipality proposed the establishment of mural tombs.
