Musine Kokalari commemorated and honored in Gjirokastra

Musine Kokalari’s 100th anniversary was commemorated today in
Gjirokastra by intellectuals, citizens and relatives. The city’s
Cultural Center has officially taken her name today.

Musine Kokalari is the first woman to receive “City’s Honor” award by the Gjirokastra Municipality.

The Mayor of the Gjirokastra, Zamira Rami, said that Kokalari’s historic, literary, cultural and political contribution needs more recognition.

Tajar Kokalari, relative of Musine, says he is grateful for the respect she is receiving now. Her contribution, he said, belongs to the entire nation and it is a dedication for the free people, a homage to freedom, and an inspiration to keep defending democracy.

Musine Kokalari was the founder of the Social-Democratic Party and is considered to be the first Albanian woman writer. She was born in Gjirokaster, 1917, and died in Rreshen after 37 years of persecution and imprisonment by the communist regime.
