Murderer of 19-year-old girl confesses

16/10/2012 00:00

The 80-year-old man, Shaban Norja, killed and beheaded Aishe, the
19-year-old and three-months-pregnant daughter of his neighbour, Muhamet
Vata. The victim refused to abort the baby she was having after a five-year sexual relation with Vata, who had raped her since when she was 14.
The murderer confessed that he had also raped Muhamet’s older daughter, Valbona, and
that Muhamet was the one who allowed his daughters to stay at his house
and help his wife, based on good trust and friendship.

In 1999-2000, Norja moved from his mountainous Surroi village in Kukes, and sought a better life for himself and his children to Xhafzotaj, Durres. He settled at Vata’s property for free, where he built a shack just for having a shelter for his family. Then he worked hard and made a good name as a car mechanic, until he bought Vata’s land and built a three-store house, creating a good friendship with the neighbour that helped him.

But when Vata’s first daughter got married, her husband returned her on the first night after the wedding for not being a virgin. Vata obliged her daughter to tell him the truth about the person that brought this shame to their family. After Valbona made Norja’s name saying that she had been raped, Vata confronted him harshly and cut off the old friendship with the neighbour that he trusted. But still, he didn’t make a police report, probably to cover as soon as possible a matter that brought shame upon him and the family.

Vata never thought that his maniac neighbour would do the same thing to his second daughter, Aishe Vata. Villagers say he was fully dedicated to his younger daughter, working hard to provide education and accompanying her everywhere. He came to know that his neighbour had abused with her too only after Shaban Norja killed the 19-year-old girl, a student at the first year of Nursery School, after finding out that she was pregnant with him. After killing her with a fatal shot in the head, the murderer cut her head off and threw it, hoping that the body would not be identified.

One day after the shocking news, the other residents seem more prone to speak with the media and recall other episodes regarding the protagonists of this horrible tragedy. They remember that when the girls were young, the murderer used to travel around with Vata’s daughters on his motorcycle, with Vata’s blessing based on their friendship and senior age.

Feeling ashamed, Vata refused to retrieve the body and the head of his daughter from the morgue, even after the Police found it. But the victim’s grandfather decided to show up for his niece. A small casket was used for the head of the victim, and it was taken by the other family members to bury it with the rest of the body. Although the family members finally decided to take the body, they still don’t say if there will be a funeral for commemorating the young girls with all honours.

According to the coroner, Norja had taken the girl’s life through a single shot in the back of her head, and the bullet had exited from her left eye. Then he beheaded the body, saying that this was the victim’s last desire. When he had asked her to abort the baby, Aishe had told him that she’d rather die than remove the baby. In case he would kill her, she had asked him to cut her head off so that no one could know it was her. And that’s what Norja did. He told the police that after raping the girl when she was 14, she had returned to him for sexual intercourse on her own will. The girl’s body was found with a dress that the murderer had bought her as a gift.

The detectives tried to expand the investigation at other people, including Shaban’s son, Nard Norja, who had been in Albania a few months ago and who lives with his family in Italy. Nard Norja helped the police with information that led the detectives to his father, saying that he had suspicions on his father’s behaviour. Besides the old man’s confession, the police took the final confirmation when the coroner certified that Shaban Norja was the baby’s father.

Strangely enough, some women in the village defend the murderer saying that they knew him as a decent man. And when asked if he liked going after women, they admit this behaviour of the old man and justify it by saying that “every man is like that when he finds women that allow him to”. The police is trying to collect declarations from the village, but it seems that the people are careful to not stain the honour of other girls, since Norja has declared that he had also abused with other women in the village.
