Murder of Chief of Police

Paço: Yesterday’s tragedy was the last of a long series of murders and other crimes that are creating an uncertain security among citizens. You have been director of these structures. Can you tell us from your experience how this situation should be resolved? What is going on with the higher criminality rates?

Çano: “It is true that there have been more crimes recently. Ordinary crime has created uncertainty among the citizens. We are seeing murders, robberies and even attacks against police officers.

Paço: Three police officers killed in eight months. The murder of Dritan Lamaj can be considered as the worst, since he was killed for his duty. Where do these people find the courage to attack high rank police officials with mafia style executions?

Çano: “We have three martyrs today. This shows that the criminal elements have caused fear to the citizens by attacking high rank officials. This is a special situation that demands a reorganization of the Interior Ministry and the Police.”

Paço: You think that the police or politics has affected the fact that crime attacks police?

Çano: “The state and the police are both responsible for this.  The state must give more support to these structures and to the fight against crime. The state should support them through increased wages and should focus on the war against organized crimes. The police must extend its activity within the community, recognize the criminal elements and make everything possible to stop crimes. If these elements attack the police, then the fight against crime should be more frontal.

Paço: Do you think that the authors of this crime will be found? We have other unsolved cases, such as the murder of the Judge in Vlore.

Çano: “Specialized people especially from the private sector should work more to follow the incriminated elements. Their suspension and failure with the duties given makes the case to be easily forgotten. This is a serious problem, and that’s why I ask my former colleagues to insist more with their job against those who attack the police.
