MPs discussing waste management

170 million EUR is the cost for implementing the Integrated Waste
Management Project that is being discussed at the Parliamentary
Commission of Integration.

The Director of Environment Policies, Pellumb Abeshi explained that every government link must have its own competences for the waste management.

“The responsibility must be addressed to the assigned institutions and which should respond for stopping transit crossing of waste materials in the territory. The greatest problematic, not only in Albania, is the administration of hazardous waste materials. For avoiding any possible incident during the transitory transportation across our territory of materials that could create pollution, we have proposed this alternative”, Abeshi declared.

The opposition MP Ditmir Bushati reminded that environment pollution in Albania is at very high parameters. There is pollution from cement factories, kilns fed with burning tires and almost all Albanian rivers are filled with waste materials.

“I was sure that I shouldn’t expect any answer for the owners of the waste materials that are thrown near the Albanian rivers and roads, because our law is just verbal, never actually resolves anything. Who will declare these materials, how will they be declared, with what mechanism? There is no plan for this issue”, Bushati declared.

Mr. Bushati didn’t vote this draft-law arguing that the cost is not specified step by step and the measures to be taken on terrain are not clear. The MP of the ruling democrats, Mesila Doda, asked an acceleration of the procedures for correcting all objections.

Opposition MPs focused on the waste management and expressed their skepticism for making a profiting business out of it.
