Tirana will have a mosaic that makes eternal the moment when the flag was built on November 26th 1912, in Tirana.

The mosaic was created with pebbles collected by the author Gezim Hidri in areas where most of Albania’s fights have taken place. The Mayor of Tirana, Lulzim Basha, thanked the Tirana families for their contribution in the Independence Declaration and valued the work made by Gezim Hidri.

“We gathered here today, on the place where the flag was raised, to inaugurate a rare mosaic of our national flag. This mosaic was created with natural pebbles and it is 2012 mm long to commemorate the 100th year of independence, and 1200 mm wide to commemorate the 1200 months of a century. It was created by one of the best stone artists in Albania, Mr. Gezim Hidri”, Basha declared.

Other activities were held at the Murat Topdani pedestrian road, with a fair of Albanian products and a rock concert.

Tirana families honoured

On the 100th anniversary of independence, the oldest Tirana families gathered in an activity organized for November 26th, organized by the Socialist Party. Representatives of the Toptani, Nallbani, Vorpsi, Sallaku, Tafaj and Kellezi gathered to put on display the values of Albanians and their contribution in the declaration of independence.

“The historian and Honoured Citizen of Tirana, Professor Kristo Frasheri, writes that during the difficult days of 1912, Tirana’s history was being written with hours. The Serbian armies had taken Kruje and were rushing towards Tirana. The members of the Tirana Council gathered on November 26th 1912 to declare the independence. The historic decision was publicly declared by Refik Toptani, closing the speech with the words ‘Long live independent Albania and the independent flag’”, as reminded by Aldrin Dalipi, head of the Socialist Group of Councillors at the Municipal Council.

Photographer Adem Rreli opened an exhibition with old greeting cards with images from Tirana.

“These greeting cards have images from 1912 to 1939. Some of them show the reality of the civilization that there was in this city. There’s a greeting card with the old building of the Vatican Office. It has been reconstructed and its image has remained the same. I think that it should be a model for all old buildings in Tirana, and the state must invest”, Rreli declared.

Independence, celebrations in Ulqin

The 100th anniversary of independence has brought a celebration atmosphere in the areas inhabitated by the Albanians in Montenegro. As soon as you cross the border, there are more and more houses with the Albanian flag in their windows.

The Albanians of Montenegro have organized many activities with exhibitions and concerts.

Although the Montenegro Parliament has ratified a law that prohibits the Albanian flag in public areas, the Albanians have challenged it.
