The finalization of the agreement for turning in function the two border
checkpoints in Northern Mitrovice seems to have irritated Kosovo Serbs.

As reported by the news agency Kosovapress, dozens of them were seen going to different border checkpoints during last nigh. The Serbs have even placed sand in some roads for blocking the passage of Kosovo police and Customs agents towards the Jarinje and Bernjak checkpoints.

“Zveqan Serbs have stopped a 20 vehicle motorcade of KFOR, which were traveling to Jarinje, and after two hours of negotiations, the KFOR soldiers were obliged to turn back. The Serbs gathered after the reaction of the so called Chief of Mitrovica District, Redenko Nedelkovich. He asked KFOR to unblock the border checkpoint at Izvor village, near Banjska, and other alternative roads; otherwise he threatened to block all northern roads.

The plan for turning the border checkpoints to normality will be implemented on September 16th, based on the agreement between Prishtina and Belgrade for recognizing the Kosovo stamps.

The government announced that in coordination with the international factor in Kosovo, they will start implementing the operation plan for turning border checkpoints 1 and 31 to full functionality. What remains a real challenge is the reaction of the local Serbs in Northern Kosovo, and Belgrade’s implications at that area.
