One day after the report made by Fiks Fare regarding the situation in
Gerdec explosion site, where the residents collect ammunition materials
for selling them, the Minister of Defense declared that they are taking
the necessary measures and appealed the people to not enter the area.
“There are works undergoing at the Gerdec region, where a US company is working through a British subcontractor. Gerdec is a military area and I appeal the residents to not enter the territory until all dangerous ammunition are found and eliminated. We have finished most oft he cleaning in this area and our goal is to clean, rehabilitate and certify the entire Gerdec area. Is a duty of the entire community to not enter these military areas”, declared the Deputy Minister of Defense, Ekrem Spahia.
Four years after the tragedy, some of the Gerdec residents and the surrounding villages enter each day the danger area seeking for metal that remained after the explosion. Women, men and children enter the territory that is only a few meters away from the fatal crater. In order to survive in the extreme financial situation, they are obliged to risk they life for finding metal parts that could be sold.
Fiks Fare journalists entered together with the residents in the restricted area, and found unexploded materials that are found by children, dismantled and then sold for scrap.
