The Ministry of Defense reacted after the letter sent by President
Nishani to the Parliament of Albania, who expressed his concern about
the low military budget.
The Ministry says the budget 2017 has 1.1% of the GDP for the army, which includes payments, pensions, spending for missions, investments and former military pensions.
The Ministry explains that the budget does not affect the defense objectives or the NATO commitments and constitutional obligations.
According to the Ministry, they have agreed with the USA and Italy to have the entire army of Albania equipped with NATO standard arms within the first three months of the next year.
The heavy vehicles which were planned to be bought with Albanian taxpayers’ money in the next ten years will come for free, according to the Ministry, which listed the missions in which the Armed Forces of Albania will be present in 2017, and which will be covered by the state budget.
