Minister of Integration: “Reform doesn’t start negotiations. We need implementation”

The Justice Reform constitutional amendments and the “Vetting Law” may
not be enough for Albania to receive a positive recommendation from the
European Commission, which will be decisive for opening the accession
negotiations.

“My message is to pass the seven laws as soon as possible, of course, in full accordance with the Constitution of Albania”, said the Minister of Integration, Klaudia Gjosha.

The European Commission published Albania’s progress report this October. To receive a positive recommendation, our country needs to give evidence that the Justice Reform is being implemented.

“It would be very positive to pass the seven laws within August, since Albania will report the progress at the European Commission this September. August will be the decisive month for the integration process and for the reform”, Gjosha adds.

For Albania to start the accession talks, the recommendation of the European Commission needs to be followed by a political decision in December. But is this possible?

“I cannot say anything about December. It will be up to the member countries. The Ministry of Integration has strong ties with the procedures and the technical process of integration. This means that my connection goes no further than the European Commission and their positive recommendation for the negotiations”, said Minister Klajda Gjosha.

But this process needs a decision from Albania before it can receive a green light from Europe.

“I trust the Albanian politics will show maturity and pass the seven laws with consensus in an extraordinary session. We are ready to interrupt our holidays and return to Parliament for voting the seven decisive laws, in order to make way for the implementation of the reform”, Gjosha declared.
