Millions of EUR frozen in concrete

The Construction sector has turned into a depot of unsold apartments due to the drastic decrease of demand.

The Builders’ Association declared that the number of unsold apartments has reached 12.000 this year. The biggest number is in tourist towns, where there was a construction boom.

“There are 5000 in Vlore, 2500 in Saranda, 300 in Korce and 4500 in Durres. In Tirana, only within Tirana’s municipality, not Kashar and other surrounding areas, it goes from 600 to 700 apartments”, declared Maksim Muci, head of the Builders’ Association.

Another problem the firms are facing is the unpaid bills by the government, accumulating a debt that goes at around 100 million EUR. The Builders Association rejected the government’s claims that their constructions were finished before the deadline, and they demand payments.

The Association expresses its reserves as regards the Tirana Regulation plan, in which the number of structural sub-units has decreased to 460 from 600, and there is no fixed value for the construction intensity. All these problems, according to the association, leave gaps for corruption and lack of transparency with the construction permits.
