Meta’s trial, Brussels reacts

The European Commission doesn’t have the authority to comment about
special verdicts of the courts in Albania, but the Meta-Prifti case has
been followed closely by the European Commission services and several
embassies in the country, and it is expected to be evaluated in the next
progress report.

“The European Commission is taking notes about this verdict, but we cannot comment specific cases”, declared Peter Stano, spokesperson of the EU Commissioner, Stefan Fule.

Asked by Top Channel for an opinion if the court decision was independent or with political interventions, Stano gave this answer:

“The European Commission doesn’t have a mandate and will not comment special cases, but I can only say that the rule of law is a key element in the European road for every country that wants to enter the EU. For Albania, the rule of law is one of the 12 key priorities that have been set. We will continue to observe the performance of Albania for each of the key priorities, and then we will summarize the evaluation and will publish it in the next progress report, later this year”.

The judicial reform was considered as the main priority of the Enlargement Strategy of the European Commission for this year, which is one of the 12 criteria for the candidate status of Albania.

With only a three-paragraph long verdict, the Supreme Court found Ilir Meta not guilty, which was something more than expected, but without providing the explanatory arguments.
