President Ilir Meta has reacted regarding the issue of the National Theater building, whose land has been transferred to the Municipality of Tirana with a government decision.
In a statement to the media, President Meta states that “the National Theater complex embodies the values of our national identity and heritage, that enjoy special and direct protection from the Constitution of the Republic of Albania.”
“Yesterday, the Council of Ministers decided to transfer the ownership of this national property to the Municipality of Tirana, in order to build a new building there. This decision-making in this practice means that currently is being used another extra-legal procedure, in order to demolish the buildings of the National Theater.
“This decision of the Council of Ministers and the expressed will of the Municipality of Tirana, are not in accordance with the functioning of the rule of law and does not correspond with the values of the European Union, whose cultural institutions have in fact expressed the will to protect of this facility and its restoration.
“Yesterday’s decision of the government has rightly created a strong civic reaction, as among other things, it is taken at a time when the country is in a state of natural disaster and restrictive measures of freedom of movement”, it is said in Meta’s statement.
