The Albanian Parliament Speaker, Ilir Meta, was part of the forum
“Albania and Serbia towards a joint future in the EU”, organized by the
Albanian Institute of International Studies, together with the sister
institute in Serbia.
This meeting had the presence of diplomats, ambassadors and civil society members from both Albania and Serbia.
Ilir Meta said that after the fall of the Milosevic regime, a new phase started in the relations between Albania and Serbia. He underlined as extremely important the dynamics between both countries.
“16 years have passed since Milosevic left and Serbia started a new phase. We are not where we should have been, because we are still held hostage of our past, of consequences of a cold war. I think that both countries today have a clear objective for the EU integration. The dynamic of this relation should have been stronger and even more stable”, Meta said.
He emphasized that the progress of agreements between both countries has been slow, since less than half of the propositions made by Albania in 2002 have been signed so far.
“This is not normal. There is no reason to delay them, since the interest here is mutual”, Meta said.
