Merkel’s CDU party said yes to opening the EU accession negotiations for Albania, but their MP, Johann Wadephul said in an interview for Deutsche Welle that he sees the creation of refugee camps in Albania as very positive.
Wadephul said that Albania is as relevant as the other Western Balkan countries, with which Germany has strong ties, and that the European perspective is important especially for reducing the tension of the former conflicts in the area.
As for the refugee issue, he says: “I see it as an interesting proposition that took me by surprise. I think it is a good proposition that needs to be seen. It could be realized. We know that Albania has been very hospitable to the Kosovo refugees. We know that it was another situation since they were people speaking the same language and having the culture. This time it would be different, but I think that this is a good signal that needs to be followed.”
“I think that the offer of the Albanian government is serious and that they can verify the technical and legal conditions for its implementation. On the other hand, the European Commission should support this massively, financially and logistically. Both parties will have a very difficult task, but it should be a joint task. We are open. We see this as a positive offer and the European Commission should hold talks with Albania.”
