Mentally ill patients in prisons

During the presentation of the Monitoring Report for the Mental Health
Care in prisons, the Deputy Minister of Justice, Ermal Dobi, declared
that the transformation of the Kruje prison in Psychiatric hospital will
be the fastest solution of this problem.

The Deputy Minister of Justice gave other details for this project that will be implemented in 2012.

“The primary agenda of the Albanian government is to return the of the Institute of the Execution of Penal Actions in Kruje, a specialized hospital where these people will be cured. The Ministries of Justice and Health are discussing for finding a solution as soon as possible”, Dobi declared.

One of the monitoring group members, Nazim Shtino, who has monitored the medical aspect of the detainees, declared that the people with mental problems need more attention.

“We have 2.5 psychiatrists for every 5000 detainees, one in the Prison Hospital, one in Kruje and 1.5 in Morava, Korce”, Shtino says.

The General Director of Prisons declared for Top Channel that the Kruje Psychiatric Hospital will be cured and treat all detainees for whom the court has decided an obligatory medication. In total there are 4000 detainees, 330 of them reported with mental problems.
