Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future The National Memaliaj-Tepelena road, a 6.5 km segment, has turned into
the worst fragment of the Levan-Tepelena national road.
The works that should had finished on July 2010 have not started even the initial phase and the road is much worse than before the works even started. The Austrian “Alpine Mayreder” company was expected to construct the Levan-Tepelena axis for 70 million EUR, with funds from the European Bank of Investment and the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development, according to modern standards and in a short time. But the works were interrupted due to a lack of funds, one year ago.
Memaliaj is suffering everyday the consequences of this destroyed road. The Mayor of Memaliaj, Lulzim Mece, says hat they know nothing about what will happen later.
“It’s a great concern, a general paralysis that creates a negative atmosphere in the citizens’ life”, declared the Mayor of Memaliaj, Lulzim Mece.
More than 3500 vehicles cross each day on this road. The drivers say that they say that the 6.5 km road takes them more than 45 minutes, and that their vehicles suffer damages, especially for those who are obliged to commute each day.
During the rainy season, the road becomes almost impassable because of the potholes and water streaks, while the summer dust covers even the residences along this national road.
The Levan-Tepelena road would also include the construction of 50 bridges and 48 small works of art. Meanwhile, in the second lot of the works, the Dames-Tepelena segment that is 32.5 km wide, the firms have finished less than 30% of the works.
The company that won the concession of this road, “Alpine Mayreder”, “Alpine Bau Gmbh”, failed to pay hundreds of workers last year.
