The Minister of Environment, Fatmir Mediu, considered the efforts of the
civil society for holding a referendum against the waste import law as a
political effort for the interests of the Socialist Party.

“Unfortunately, there are people who have the interest to turn it into a political matter, by abusing with the interpretation of this law. This group is completely under the Control of the Socialist Party. It would be better if the SP would start this referendum as a Party, rather then using their speakers”, Mediu declared.

During the annual analysis for the Ministry he leads, Mediu declared that Albania should give up from the policy of burying the waste materials and start treating them in full accordance with the EU standards.

The Minister of Environment also mentioned the agreement with Montenegro, for avoiding other floods in Shkoder by managing the Drin River water sources.

The Alliance Against the Waste Import started a campaign for collecting the 50.000 necessary signatures for starting a referendum that could repeal the law of waste import.

The Alliance also started a poll for the waste management law, by asking the major aged members of 600 families, 78% of whom declared that they would vote against this law.
