Mecollari on Top Show, in 2015: “Any agreement with Greece, better than the one of 2009”

In one of his few public appearances, on Top Channel’s “Top Show” in 2015, Artur Mecollari said that any new agreement with Greece will be better than the one of 2009.

“The agreement of 2009 is the worst possible for Albania. The territorial sea and the continental shelf have different delimiting principles. They were divided with the same principle in this agreement. Secondly, this is an unprecedented agreement: there is no international agreement that divides three borders”, he said on Top Show.

The expert explains that the agreement claimed that it was done for the continental shelf, but it included other marine areas, such as the territorial sea and exclusive economic areas. In this context, Artur Mecollari considers the agreement of 2009 as a dangerous international precedent, since Greece shares marine territories with Turkey as well.

“The agreement of 2009 is a dangerous precedent because it gives Greece the right to extend its territory with 12 miles when it is possible, giving them the maximal limit”, Mecollari declared.

Currently, the marine territory of Greece reaches 6 miles. According to Mecollari, the famous expression of the former Greek Foreign Minister, Bakojanis, that Greece achieved a strategic objective in 2009, referred to the possible goal of changing the marine regime in the Aegean Sea.
