In an interview for Deutsche Welle, David McAllister, the German
politician who helped resolve the pre-election crisis in Albania,
reminded the conditions that Belgrade needs to fulfill for joining the
EU, and Kosovo remains a key criterion.
“Unfortunately, there is no dialogue due to the unclear political situation in Prishtina. The dialogue, as formulated by the EU, means that both parties, Serbia and Kosovo, try to continue the European path without blocking each other in the process”, McAllister said, as rapporteur of the European Parliament for Serbia.
Will this mean that Serbia must recognize Kosovo, since it is difficult for a non-UN country to become an EU member?
“I will quote the report. Every word is important in it, regarding this. It is necessary for a legally bound agreement that allows both parties to fully exert their duties and fulfill their obligations”, McAllister said.
He greeted the initiative of President Alexandar Vucic to start a dialogue in Serbia about the relations with Kosovo.
“The relations between Serbia and Kosovo must get normalized. This is intermediated by the EU. There has been some progress, but not as much as we hoped. It is important to implement especially the points for which there was an agreement”.
