From January 1, 2025, the Municipality of the Albanian capital Tirana announces that it will subsidize 100% of the general bus pass ticket for pensioners, as it has been doing for years for students.
All people over 60 years old, women and over 65 years old, men, residents of the Municipality of Tirana, will now travel free on buses, just like students registered in public higher education institutions.
Mayor Erion Veliaj called on all pensioners to present themselves to their administrative units with an identity card, to register so that they can receive the free general pass.
“With this budget, we are subsidizing 100% of the general pass for pensioners. We cannot give an exact figure because we do not know how many pensioners will use the service, as it will depend on the frequency of receiving the service. We will make a report every month of how many pensioners have received the service, in order to see the exact figure of the subsidy.
“Meanwhile as you know, the Municipality of Tirana already subsidizes public transport for the rest of the citizens as the ticket with the financial analysis is 50 lek ($0.50), but the Municipality of Tirana pays 10 lek of it, precisely to not increase the burden on the citizens who currently pay only 40 lek cash”, said Veliaj.
