Jorgo Goro, the acting mayor of Himara on the southern coast of Albania, was arrested today by order of the SPAK prosecutor’s office for abuse of office.
Goro led the municipality for 3 terms and continued to hold the post for the last 10 months after losing in the local elections on May 14 to Fredi Beleri.
But the latter was arrested 2 days before the local elections, under the charge of buying votes for money, a criminal offense for which the court sentenced him to 2 years in prison.
Beleri’s lawyers in September of last year reported Jorgo Goro with accusations that he facilitated alienation of coastal properties so that certain people could benefit from the status of “strategic investor”.
The investigation against Goro culminated in the fall, when, in addition to him, the “strategic investor” Artan Gaci, husband of the former socialist minister Olta Xhaçka, was called for questioning. However, SPAK’s investigation raised questions about the actions of Goro and other suspects who are suspected of being involved in forging documents in violation of the law.
In addition to this lawsuit, SPAK has also referred to the official report of the Supreme State Audit which has identified doubts regarding the violation of equality in tenders but also with certain investments on the coast of Himara, during the time when Goro was mayor. The most important finding of the High State Control concerns the construction of a resort in this area and the procedures for how construction permits were granted in the coastal area of Himara.
