“Serbia is not a problem for Albania. Greece yes”, says the Austrian
“Der Standard” newspaper in an analyze of the tense situation between
Albania and Greece regarding the maritime borders.
During a press conference with Serbia’s Prime Minister, Alexandar Vucic, the Albanian Prime Minister was asked about the maritime border issue with Greece.
“We will not negotiate the national interest for the sake of good neighboring”, Rama answered.
Der Standard says that this declaration was not welcomed in Athens, with their Foreign Minister reaction immediately:
“The political leaders of our neighboring country are deviating from the path each day more. We must return to the logic that the international laws are the best path for the European future of Albania”, declared the Greek Foreign Minister, Kostandinos Koutras.
The Austrian newspaper interprets this as a veto from Greece for the accession talks. They add that in 2014, Greece hesitated to give the candidate status to Albania. Hence, Albania’s concerns for a possible blockage of the accession talks are well founded.
Der Standards reminds the agreement of 2009 between Greece and Albania, and the Constitutional verdict against it. The Austrian newspaper also mentions the Cham case, which is considered closed by Greece but not for the Cham community living in Albania.
