Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future The Commissioner for Security at the European Union, Cecilia Malmstrom,
announced to the Western Balkan governments that corruption is on the
rise, and it allows criminal groups to infiltrate the public sector.
Malmstrom asked for more criminal assets to be seized.
During the opening speech at the first session of the meeting between the Interior and Justice Ministers, which is held in Tirana, Malmstrom appealed for the visa rule violation to stop, since the asylum seekers are on the rise.
“The implementation agencies need to be reinforced. Their capacities should be reinforced for a more efficient war against organized crime, corruption and trans-national crime, including financial investigations. More efforts are needed for seizing criminal assets. Corruption remains widespread and concerning. It hampers the investigation and war against organized crime, and allows infiltration of criminal groups into the public and private sector. Harsh punishments are needed against organized crime and corruption”, Malmstrom declared.
While the head of the Albanian government, Sali Berisha, promised in this ministerial meeting that Albania will increase the efforts to penalize the asylum seekers, although Albania has a smaller number than Macedonia and Serbia.
“I’m taking advantage to express to the European Commission our determination to undertake any necessary step and give a very determined answer to this phenomenon. We are ready to sign any kind of agreement for returning the people who abuse with this important and noble decision. We have returned from the Kingdom of Belgium two groups of Albanians who had applied for political asylum. We are trying to do the same for Luxembourg and we are ready to do this with every Schengen country”, Berisha declared.
In this meeting are present the representatives of Serbia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Albania, who are discussing about the EU reaction to stop the Western Balkan citizens from entering visa free in the Schengen area.
