The Former Socialist Minister of Defense, Pandeli Majko, does not see
the recent scandal between the Minister of Defense and the President
simply as an administrative mistake, as the Ministry led by Arben Imami
declared, but as the continuity of the tense cliamte between the
majority and the Albanian President.
“The public is aware of the vacuum that exists between the majority and the President. I think that this is the reflection of the situation that we are discussing. We must not see the situation only with the formalization of a relation between the President and the Minister of Defense. This is for two political currents that have started discussing their relation as two different currents. Unfortunately, Mr. Topi is not seen as the Albanian President by the Minister of Defense, but as the leader of a future party that will create problems in 2013”, Majko declared.
While identifying the clear political backstage of the majority for minimizing the role of the President, Majko explains the problem of the low number of Generals in the Albanian army.
“We are short of Generals, and the grade should be given either through a commission composed of old general, who propose their candidate to the Ministry through hidden voting, Than this goes as a decree at the President. Our Marine doesn’t have a ‘number 1’ figure as general, because a requirement for the Marine Commander are the grades of general or admiral”, explained the former Minister of Defense, Pandeli Majko.
Since the Constitution has clearly been infringed, would it be normal for the Minister of Defense to resign? This is what Majko answers:
“Albania has seen bigger mistakes than this, as regards the armed forces. Discussing the resignation of the Minister of Defense, is a luxury for our current political situation, or even asking a moral resignation, for the conditions in which the majority is now. I think that there will be no government changes until the next elections. Being a realist in this point of view, I think that we must not dream about things that do not happen in Albania”, Majko declared.
