Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future
The Parliament is discussing today a series of important issues for the
media law, the HPP privatization and the national lottery license. They
are discussing the proposition of the majority to hold a referendum for
passing the three laws that are required by the EU for the candidate
status.
The former Socialist Prime Minister, Pandeli Majko, declared that the referendum is a political game that was also opposed by the EU. For Majko, the problem is not passing the laws, but the handicap that was created with the Fier District.
“The EU was against this referendum. The only referendum for Albania is June 23rd. We would be the first country in the world that would hold a referendum for the Parliament’s regulation. Referendums are held for important national issues, and this proposition degenerates in the referendum level. The EU was very clear for this, and this cannot be held before the elections”, Majko declared.
Mako declared that the referendum is senseless. “This is the second referendum that the DP has asked in the history. They failed with the first and Albania failed to have the first Constitution after the fall of communism. History is repeating”, the Socialist MP declared.
The request for referendum was sent to the Parliament. According to the Constitution, a referendum cannot be held six months before and after the elections.
