Majko reacts against the DP accusations

Live on Top Channel, the former Albanian Prime Minister, Pandeli Majko,
commented the accusations that the Democratic MP, Gent Strazimiri,
launched against him earlier the day. Strazimiri accused the Socialist
government led by Pandeli Majko of compensating notorious names of the
communist regime for several times, from 1997 to 2005.

TCH: You heard the accusations launched against you for the compensations made to the notorious names of the communist regime. What’s your reaction?

Majko: “We are dealing with the daily routine of a party that has lost the connections with reality. The government representative had a court order on his hand. Accusing a Prime Minister of executing a court order is absurd. But I think that today it is worthy having a reflection. I and the colleagues of the left do not leave in the past. They are people who have been politically persecuted, part of a trauma that we have avoided. The declarations of the Democratic Party MP are shameful, because those people have received no compensation. But what I am against is the way how the Democratic Party accuses the relation with this category of people, who are disappointed and demand the law implementation in Albania. But they answer with the police, even in front of the EU and the US”.

TCH: Let’s talk about the hunger strike of the political prisoners of the communist regime. Why the former political prisoners were not compensated during the mandate of the Socialist Party?

Majko: “Because there was a vacuum of relationship. We have not hidden our relation with the past, and there was a bothering relationship. After 1997, we created the fund for the persecuted people. We took no more steps than this, because we had the feeling that we shouldn’t do more than what the Democratic Party had done. But today, the SP has the issue of the political prisoners included in the program, and we have a special representative for them. What is happening must make us reflect, rather than making harsh rhetoric. We must realize a communication today and establish a compensation, rather than arresting someone with fake evidence that he has exploited prostitution, or another one of having used fraud against an Italian citizen”.

TCH: If the Socialist Party will win the elections of 2013, what will you do for this category that has suffered from communism and the Labour Party?

Majko: “We’re not that shameless that in a key moment, such as the decision of the Council of Europe for Albania, to dare and vote against the resolution for the political prisoners, as our government did. We must turn our eyes to this shameful act that was taken in a moment when Albania was being reviewed. For money and gas, the Democratic Party is ready to sell its past”.

TCH: Thank you, Mr. Majko.
