Legendary Mashkullore tree brought down

The Mashkullora plane tree is the most famous tree in Albania, due to
its history and the famous song about the 1908 battle of the Cerciz and
Bajo Topulli group against the Ottomans.
This natural and historical monument is no longer there. A strong wind destroyed the branches that had started to rot after years of neglecting and the concrete buildings in the territory around.
The locals say that the tree had started to show damage signs for years.
The 200 year old tree in the center of the Mashkullore village was part of the historical memory of the Mashkullore battle. The tree was also related with the village meetings, weddings and shows. The residents say that they will miss it very much.
The southern Albanian villages usually have an old tree in the center, which symbolizes the popular decision making. Besides it was first built a public building and then a bar that occupied 340 square meters with concrete. Most of the roots were cut during the construction. In the last 10 years, the historical tree has had its branches falling down, until the entire structure was toppled this Wednesday.
The residents say that they will replace the tree with a new one, but the emptiness of the old one will be felt in the entire area.
