Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future The Albanian Political scene is facing a new element that is turning
into a trend. The majority MPs are suing opposition colleagues over
slander.
Albana Vokshi has made the greatest number of suits. She addressed to the court because the person with whom she is living with, when accused by the Socialist MPs of having had favors from her, was called by the accusers “the husband” when in fact he lives with her, but they are not married. For this, Vokshi sued Saimir Tahiri, Eduart Shalsi, Artan Gaci, Vasilika Hysi, Mimi Kodheli, Erjon Brace and Taulant Balla.
MP Balla has also been sued by Agron Kulicaj, vice Chief of the Police, who Balla accused as oil smuggler. The Court found Balla guilty, who then appealed the decision.
“The appeal at the Court of Appeals is based on procedural violations, because the Court has violated the constitutional principles for a legal process. Due to the lack of respecting all procedures, starting from the Court, the entire process has been compromised. None of us is against these trials in all instances, but I want to emphasize that the judges of these trials have been chosen unilaterally and are supporting the suitors”, Balla declared.
Balla says that all these suits are politically motivated, with the only goal to intimidate the opposition.
“None of these abuses against the freedom of speech will be able to make us remain silent. We will continue with the public accusations related with the existence of corruption, which has been turned into system by this majority”, Balla declared.
The most sued of the Socialist MPs, is Sajmir Tahiri, with five suits, two of which come from Shkelzen and Argita Berisha, the two children of the Prime Minister Berisha, who are asking an indemnity of 4.000.000 ALL.
“The only new thing for me was that the suits were added with two others from the Prime Minister’s family, his son and daughter. The media notified me about this suit, and I am looking forward to see the reasons and to give my answers. This is not the first suit for me. After Genc Ruli, Albana Vokshi and Agron Kulicaj, now are added Argita and Shkelzen Berisha. What I and other Socialist MPs have done has nothing to do with personal grudges, but with corruption from the government and the Prime Minister’s family members”, Tahiri declared.
For Saimir Tahiri, this situation is cause by a repressive mechanism.
“We have to do here with a political repressive mechanism, a kind of institutional lash that the Prime Minister is using against the opposition. If we say truths that hurt the PM, the next day we are in court in front of corrupted judges that pass all trial phases and work with double standards. The Gerdec trial is not over yet, while I was fined in a record time with 3.3 million ALL, on the same day when the Ministry of Economy sued the ACR company with 50.000 ALL, after one Bulqize miner died and eight others were wounded”, Tahiri declared.
When politicians have publicly accused each other, it has happened that the case has been taken by The European Court of Human Rights, such as the case Lingens against Austria, when the Court decided that public criticism is a basic condition for an effective political democracy. Such a control in the democratic society would secure not only political oppositions, but also a public opinion”.
