The Albanian Health Minister, Ilir Beqaj, declared that cigarette packs
from now on will show images of diseases caused by smoking, as part of
the commitment of the World Health Organization.
WHO says that these changes have cut smoking consumption from youth to half.
“Smoking in Albania has also been lower for the 13-15-year-old age group. The quota was 11.5% in 2009, and now it is 6%. For boys it was 17.6% and now has dropped to 8.3%. For girls it was 6.3% and now it is 3.6%”, Beqaj said.
The Health Inspectorate and Public Health Institution representatives have met with young students to raise awareness about the negative consequences of smoking. Around 330 people die every year in Albania because of smoking.
