“The European Union was created as a response to fascism. Now it is running away in fear from populism and fascism”.
This is the stance that Albin Kurti, winner of the elections in Kosovo, held in an interview with the British newspaper, “The Guardian” after the EU decided to not open the accession negotiations with Albania and Northern Macedonia.
Kurti underlined that this decision reduces the chances to reach an agreement between Kosovo and Serbia.
Criticizing Macron, Kurti said that he cannot say at first that the EU needs an internal reform and then continue with the enlargement process since these things go side by side.
“Europe is an important historical project and it cannot have one single author or leader. We have seen how the situation in the Western Balkans got worse when Jean-Claude Juncker said that there will be no enlargement in the next five years”, Kurti said.
He also declared that the EU and the Balkans are important for each other, and Paris should know this.
